Island Flying Foxes
A while back we had a post about the effect that the vagaries of language might have on one's perception of objects (ie porch v veranda and bungalow v chalet), and in the same vein we present you with the famed Island Flying Foxes of Pulau Tioman!
A few comments:
1) Bats are awesome regardless of what you call them,
2) This island is full of relatively large bats (or Pteropus hypomelanus, as their mother calls them when she's upset with them),
3) Watching them twitch around and make godawful noises while they sleep hanging from trees during the day is strangely hypnotic, and
4) Whoever* originally decided to rebrand them as 'flying foxes' should really be working as a high-powered marketing executive for some sleazy Fortune 500 company.
*Fact Check: Our friends at Merriam-Webster say the phrase has been around since at least 1759, so there's a good chance this person is already happily retired....
