Feeling Decadent

Decadent (adjective): characterised by or appealing to self-indulgence.

"He was feeling a little decadent this morning so he ordered two breakfasts: the usual nasi lemak* with egg, followed by a chocolate banana roti canai** - the latter being an off-menu item, and thus all the more self-indulgent."

Total cost: 10 ringgit, or around $2.25

*Nasi lemak you should already be well-acquainted with from previous posts

**'Roti' just means bread in Sanskrit and most other Indian languages, while 'canai' is a Malay word meaning ‘to roll (dough) thinly’, so they're basically an Indo-Malaysian crêpes, which you can find throughout southeast Asia.

Usually served as a savoury dish and accompanied by some thin curry or three, they also have sweet varieties for uncultured tourists like us. And while banana and chocolate are both on most menus here in the village, chocolate and banana together strangely are not, so you've got to make a special request and perhaps endure a raised eyebrow or even a rolled eye. Such are the trials and tribulations of a shamelessly decadent Westerner living it up in the tropics....
