Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak is the national dish of Malaysia. Primarily eaten for breakfast and consisting of coconut rice, sambal, anchovies (on this plate they're hiding under the sambal), a fried egg and some cucumbers (and usually peanuts).

It's also often accompanied with (fried) chicken, especially when eaten for lunch or dinner, and is traditionally served inside a folded up banana leaf - ie the original eco-friendly, takeaway packaging.

This might not look like much, but, wow, the flavour of the coconut rice is creamy and rich - much better than you get from street vendors in Kuala Lumpur - and it's obviously a hit with the locals, even the four-legged variety. Plus, it comes with a free sea view.

Total cost: 6 ringgit, or around $1.33
