Surprising ‘Nomadic’ Wisdom

Just one more reminder not to judge a book by its cover, no matter how cringey that cover may be © Joshua Gresham / Unsplash

While we've long been annoyed by people who stay in nice Airbnbs and make decent a decent living by sitting in front of their Macbooks calling themselves 'nomads', this is a really concise, insightful, well-written article about why travelling for extended periods is cool and why having less stuff is better than having lots of stuff. It's also one more superfluous lesson not to judge a book by its cover - no matter how cringey (or blonde and/or vacuous that cover may objectively be).

Although, that said, after finding that the author's Instagram page is literally just 100s of photos of her face in different places around the world - ie peak cringyness and everything that's wrong with both travel blogging and social media - we still had second thoughts about posting it. But alas, here's an (annotated) excerpt to pique your interest in reading for yourself:

"Is this article an indictment of the American way and our popular Western choices?* I don’t mean it to be. But we would be blind not to see we are a society that over-consumes: commercialism and materialism, food and alcohol addictions, vanity and appearances, and a host of other deadly sins. I may be a nomad** living on $74*** a day, with only the things that fit in my SUV… but I have enough—enough belongings to be comfortable, and enough to survive and thrive."

*It 100% is an indictment of the American way, but also a 100% valid one

**You're not a nomad

***That's actually a lot of money to live off of (approximately 3x more than we spend)
