"Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, or just the Friday Mosque, is one of Kuala Lumpur's prettiest buildings. It also sits atop the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers, from which Kuala Lumpur (or literally 'the muddy confluence') got its name. Somehow we only learned that little tidbit a few weeks ago.....

In any event, Ramadan Mubarak!"

"ยกFeliz Pascua! You know it's an important holiday when they roll out the brand new portable basketball hoops to replace the netless, backboardless one that the locals use in the main waterfront park. Obviously they didn't want to make the city folks feel bad for getting schooled 'White Men Can't Jump' style by the locals.

In all seriousness, Easter and the entire Holy Week (Semana Santa) is apparently the biggest holiday in Colombia, and the story checks out here in Riohacha, as on Thursday there were (approximately) 3-4x more people than at any point over the past three months, and Friday was probably double that.

Also, the entire city is covered in empty whiskey bottles and broken glass, because apparently the main Easter tradition here is to drink beer and whiskey all day and night, then smash the bottles on the ground in celebration. Not sure how exactly this is connected to the Resurrection, but experiencing such fascinating cultural peculiarities is obviously one of the highlights of travelโ€ฆโ€ฆ"

"Even with the full moon out in force, we probably won't manage to make it to midnight Mass tonight for a variety of reasons (including not having the proper attire, not speaking Spanish and not being Catholic), BUT just to try and keep our good graces covered, here are a couple photos we snapped of the entryway to our last Airbnb. Imagine coming home to be greeted with that after a night of Colombian-style revelry. Yikes! Or, Jesus Christ! Or actually, Jesucristo!

And if you were wondering (and of course you were, because only astute observers and the ultra-curious follow this page), the two books on the little table there are the Diary of Anne Frank and Michelle Obama's autobiography in Spanish, because of course they are....."
