Terrible Nepal News
Terrible news out of Nepal yesterday - at least if you're a power cable aficionado like us, which, judging from previous posts (namely here and here), is the vast majority of you.
Yes, the rumours are sadly true, the shortsighted bureaucrats have decided to begin dismantling Kathmandu's #1 tourist attraction, its clear raison d'être: the tens of millions of kilometres of photogenic overhead cables that cover the city, which in addition to being the cornerstone of the country's entire tourist industry, have also long provided much needed shade during the warmer months, and made umbrellas obsolete during the rainy season. Sad, sad times we live in.
No word yet on how this will affect the Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO Heritage status, but it's surely something those safeguarders of humanity's culture and history in their plushy Paris offices won't take lightly! Non monsieur!
Of course, this being Nepal, the job should be completed in exactly forever and a day, so you've still got a little bit of time to make one last pilgrimage to this real life Shangrila, this paradise of airborne wire and rubber, the Mecca of civil engineering, the one and only Kathmandu!
