Malaysia seems to have a different public holiday every week, which is all right by us. We might be homeless, unemployed Covid refugees with one day blending imperceptibly into the next, but we still appreciate a good excuse to put our feet up and take it easy.

Sure, what happened on this day nineteen years ago was almost certainly an inside job, which, either way, ushered in two decades (and counting) of unjustifiable, immoral, unimaginably expensive wars of aggression that destroyed various countries and signalled the inevitable demise of the US empire, but…

Our last minute decision to fly halfway around the world to spend indefinite lockdown time in Malaysia was already on the very shortlist of the best decisions we've ever made. And now that we've lucked into living steps from the water on a quiet 2km stretch of beach on a practically empty tropical island in the South China Sea, it's a clear frontrunner.
